Paint and polymer durability (with Dr. Terry Egerton and Professor Jim White)

We have developed a novel, in-situ FTIR method for studying the photodegradation of paint and polymer samples.  The use of a specially constructed cell permits simultaneous, simulated solar UV exposure of the sample and IR interrogation of the vapour in the cell.  The measurement time required to monitor the carbon dioxide emitted from samples is typically  5 hours – very much less than conventional artificial weathering exposures.
